Timber Sliding Sash Windows

The Timber Sliding sash window of today has been much improved and upgraded compared to those of years ago. Double glazing is almost always fitted as standard and will include compulsory low energy glass. In addition, modern high security locking is readily available; double draught proofing, conventional corded balance weights or modern load bearing spiral balances.

One of the biggest advantages of timber sliding sash windows is the ability to replicate any period or design feature. Available in various timbers - hardwoods, softwoods, even modern day engineered wood and finished in any colour with water based micropourous spray paints. Recently specially designed PVCu profiles with direct consultation with English heritage and other influential bodies has allowed PVCu to be used in a number of period style buildings, including those of listed status, although as mentioned above, this still tends to be fairly unusual. Optional traditional extras that can be added to PVCu Sliding Sash windows include a decorative ‘horn’ on the top sliding sash and a deep bottom sash profile.

Modern PVCu Vertical Sliders have been engineered to accommodate the vigour of everyday life, while at the same time being simple and easy to operate. The main difference between a PVCu sliding sash window (apart from the material) and the more traditional timber box sash window is the means of holding the sashes in position. Instead of weights, pulleys and a cord, a pair of sophisticated spring and spiral balancers has taken over the sash retention. The sashes can also be made to tilt inwards for easy cleaning along with limit stops for added security and safety.

The traditional glazing bar arrangement may also be replicated by concealing the glazing bars within the double glazed unit, or by surface mounting the bars onto the external faces of the double glazed unit (Astragal bars).

Modern PVC-U technology means no painting is necessary and required maintenance is almost zero. Each window is fully double glazed for improved thermal insulation, lower fuel bills and less noise intrusion from outside.

Replica stained glass and various glazing options are also available. Along with modern foiled finishes available in woodgrains, oaks, black, cream and white. Bonded paint finishes are also available giving virtually any colour you want.

Security includes the latest internal glazing, key locks and shoots bolts. Brass catches and optional decorative horns can be added in order to replicate traditional timber aesthetics.

Important information when considering full box sash replacement

On Older style properties Box Sash windows are normally fitted from the room side behind the exterior brickwork and then built off of with timber liners finished with moulded architraves and mouldings - this is the character or the windows.

Warning
When these boxes are removed, please be prepared for years of dust that builds up behind them, we would advise that as much protection to carpets and furniture is made (see our installations page). It is also very important when considering various competitors quotations, that you ask exactly what will be done with the Box Sash voids with regards to rebuilding or if they are going to actually remove the complete Box Sash. There are companies retaining the original box and fitting new sliders into them. Due to the size of the profiles this gives a very heavy looking window with a vast loss of glass area (replacement vertical sliders  are designed as a complete replacement). This could be why company A appears to be so much cheaper than others).

How will the box sash void be made good?
There are various methods of finishing the void once the window is installed:

1) Brick up and plaster finish to the room side, this brings the fitting areas in line with a modern home finish for decorating but does loos the original character.

2) Line out voids using either timber or MDF liners with moulded architraves. This method will give a back to original appearance and also allow the timbers to be finished to a choice or colours to suit the customer’s requirements.

3) Line out using PVCu trims & mouldings (normally associated with lower cost installations). This method is less expensive but we feel in time does look rather yuk, due to the use of silicones and glues for fixing that can look dirty and unsightly if not kept clean. No method of giving a freshened up look with future decorating of the room. There are of course some very nice moulded profiles now available in PVCu that can complement the window and if fitted correctly can be finished to form a very nice completed job.
